When I started making content online, I wanted to convey a perfectly professional image.
What ended up happening though was that I was super rigid and robotic in my earliest videos.
I actually had a friend comment on one telling me I needed to relax a little bit because I looked too tense on camera.
Fast forward a couple years and I understand what he meant completely, but at the time I was a bit confused.
At this point though, I can tell that the issue was I was trying too hard to convey a particular image, rather than just being authentically me.
I mentioned before that in the first year I only got 96 subscribers, and the reason I think that I got such a small number was because I was being WAY TOO SERIOUS.
In trying to be something I hadn’t truly become yet, I was shooting myself in the foot so to speak.
As Avril Lavigne might say, I was “[M]aking things so complicated”
(Look up the song to listen to while you finish this post lol)
Being too serious at first is an extremely common mistake though.
Nearly everyone makes it at some point in their life.
And it makes sense.
When you want to convey a different image than the one you currently have, it seems logical to mimic the style of what you want to become to the extreme.
Drop down below your experience with being too serious!

It’s a bit ironic but the reality is that the less serious you appear, the more genuine and influential you will become.
Of course, there’s definite exceptions and limitations, but you need to be able to let your true nature shine through the image you're trying to convey.
That’s what’s going to attract people.
You shouldn’t try so hard to convey a particular image because being a try-hard can weird people out.
I certainly looked a bit weird in my earlier videos!
But by adopting a laid-back attitude– within reason of course– you will WIN all sorts of people to your side and your audience will grow exponentially!
